IRS Form 1098-T Reporting
 
The University of California has contracted with Tax Credit Reporting Service (TCRS) to electronically produce your IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement. You will receive an email notification from TCRS when your 1098-T is available online at www.1098T.com. Be sure your spam filter does not capture email from the TCRS domain tcrs@xerox.com.

IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement is used to assist taxpayers in determining eligibility for an educational tax credit and/or deduction.  
The IRS has given universities an option for reporting qualified tuition and related expenses.  That option is to report payments received from students (Box 1) or amounts billed students (Box 2).  Most universities, including UC Merced, have elected to report amounts billed students (Box 2).  Therefore, UC Merced will report nothing in Box 1.


Box 2 - Amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses – this amount is reported to the IRS based on the date fees are assessed.  For most students, Spring semester fees are assessed on or about December 1 of the previous calendar year.  Therefore, if you register for the spring term in November or December, the corresponding fees charged by UC Merced will be reported to the IRS in the calendar year preceding the spring semester.  Another way of looking at this is – spring fees may be reported to the IRS in the calendar year preceding the year in which you pay them.



Information Reported to the Internal Revenue Service
 

UC Merced reports the following information to the IRS on form 1098-T:

 
  • Student name, address and social security number
  • Amount of qualifying tuition and related expenses charged to the student account during the year
  • Amount of grants and scholarships applied to the student account during the year
  • Adjustments made for a prior year (to qualifying tuition and related expenses or grants and scholarships)
  • A box is checked if the student was registered at least half-time during the year
  • A box is checked if the student was a graduate student during the year

  • Produces electronic form 1098-T for students
  • Files forms 1098-T with the Internal Revenue Service
  • Hosts the Tax Credit Reporting Service (TCRS) website where students can access their form 1098-T
  • Hosts a toll-free student support center (877-467-3821) to answer inquiries regarding form 1098-T

 

Access Your Form 1098-T

 
Your form 1098-T is accessible online at www.1098-T.com    

  • If it is your first time entering the TCRS website, please use their instructions for setting up a PIN
  • Click "Access My Record" to log in to the system
  • Log in using your Social Security Number or UC Merced student ID number, your last name and password (PIN).
  • Once logged in, select the tax year from the drop down menu.
  • Print the form for use in preparing your tax return.
